Introduction | Configuration

Question:I have been trying to install and configure the QMail server on Red Hat 9.0, but couldn't procure the correct RPMs for the same. Please give me the link from where I can download the correct RPM and also tell me how to configure a fully secured QMail server?

ANS: I suggest you visit the URL http://www.lifewithqmail org/lwq.txt where you should get details about the Qmail server.

2) Please specify the minimum hardware requirements for installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 3. Information on the following would be valuable.

Which minimum speed of processor does it support?
Minimum amount of RAM?
Minimum hard disk space?

ANS: The following are the suggested hardware requirements for RHEL 3.0:
A pentium processor with a speed of 166MHz or more
128 MB of RAM
2-4 GB of free space - depends, of course, on then type of installation you want to do.

3) I am not able to play videos on Linux. I have installed the Windows Media player but it shows me an error message stating that I have not written mci in the system. ini file. Please tell me what adjustments are required to play videos on the Linux operating system?

ANS: Use MPlayer as it is one of the most commonly used Media Players for Linux. To install MPlayer from source code, download the code tarball from http:// www.mplayerhq. hu/homepage/ design7/dload.html. Extract the files into a temporary directory. Change to the directory in which you downl loaded the files and enter the commands.

4) I have reading your Q & A section regularly and find it quite informative. Could you please answer the following queries?

How do I set up SUSE 9.3 to receive e-mail? Outgoing mails work. I have the exchange server 2003. If you enable IMAP on your exchange server, can you use all mailboxes there?

ANS: If you enable IMAP on your exchange server you can use all mailboxes there. You can then use kde-mail or other imap-enabled mail clients to browes the folders, leaving the mail on the exchange server. Using fetchmail you can receive mail and transfer it to your local Unix/ Linux mailbox.

5) I have a dual-booting Win XP and Red Hat. 9.0 system. I want to see on my desktop the additional hard disk that has Win XP installed on it. I see the additional hard disk as Drive D in Windows, but when I check in Red Hat 9.0, I cannot see it. I tried using the new terminal command to mount it manually but I'm informed that the device mounted does not exist. Can you please give me an idea on how to mount the additional hard disk manually? I do not wish to use the terminal!

ANS: If both your partitions are on your first hard disk, then Linux will see them as / dev/ hda 1 and / dev / hda 2. Your Linux boot partition is probably / dev/ hdb 1. In order to mount your XP partitions you need to know the XP file system type and you need to create a directory in Linux to mount each partition. Log in as the root user and enter the following two commands.

6) I have approximately six months of experience with Red Hat Linux. I am very fond of Linux , and have desire to create my own Linux system. Can you guide me on how I should go about doing this?

ANS: This is not very easy, but not all that difficult either. You can join any group forum that does this. Visit the URL http:// www. linuxfromscratch.org/. This should help you.

7) I have a P4 machine with 256 MB RAM, a 40 GB HDD and a CD RW drive. The CD-R/W doesn't work. Can you help me set right?

ANS: One possible cause is that you might have an IDE drive. Compile the kernel with ide- scsi emulation enabled (under IDE support), and make sure you enable SCSI support for CD-ROM. This will let you use SCSI drivers to access IDE devices.

8) I am new to Linux. During my experiments with it, I tried to encrypt my root password. But, unfortunately, even after restarting the system, my root password didn't work. How can I solve this problem? I used the command passwd-p root?

ANS: Please refer to the link ( http://aplawrence.com/Linux/ lostlinuxpassword. html) to find a solution to your problem.
